The Bugwelle (“bow wave”) stands in the middle of Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße in Bremerhaven’s city centre, at the entrance to the pedestrian zone “Bürger” near Theodor-Heuss-Platz. The fountain sculpture shows a ship’s bow with a female figurehead leaning forward from a height of five metres, two bow waves on the sides, a hull at the back and a bronze buoy modelled on the key buoy of 1664.
The concept is by Christel Mandos-Feldmann and the execution by Norbert Marten; the bronze was sand-cast by the Harms art foundry in Oldenburg. Mayor Jörg Schulz inaugurated the fountain in May 2002. The figure recalls the barque “Seute Deern” and is meant to link the pedestrian zone with the city’s cultural quarter. In the frost-free months the bow waves are flooded from an underground fountain chamber, and the sculpture is lit at night.
